The Gospel according to Dracula -- a spine-tingling good read

HOLLISTON, MASSACHUSETTS (ANS) -- When I saw the title of his newest book, I thought the author of the international bestseller Son of Hamas might have knocked around in warzones a little too long, gotten a bit befuddled in the Middle Eastern sun.

Dracula? A Bible study? One might just as well try to pair Hannibal Lecter with Julia Child.
But the farther you read, the more you see that it works.
Unlike his other nonfiction books, Ron Brackin reveals his lighter side in The Gospel according to Dracula. Not disrespectful or flippant, but direct, sometimes even childlike.
The Jesus the reader meets is the messiah who likes people as well as loves them, who prefers to be in and among us, rather than confined to sanctuaries, seminaries, and cemeteries. And the author guides us around the kingdom of God as one familiar and enchanted with the terrain.
But be warned. The Gospel according to Dracula is not another feel-good book. Brackin takes sins, superstitions, and idols by the throat and shakes them. Take a good look, he challenges the reader. Are these cheap geegaws more desirable than our Lover?
He also jerks the devil out of the tall grass and exposes him to the Sonlight, revealing no deadly viper, but a worm whose venomous tongue is his only weapon.
The jury is still out, however, on the recurring feature Brackin calls “N’stuff.” Some might argue that vampire lore, bat cosmetics, garlic phobias, and Victorian burial customs have no place in a Bible study. Others might be having too much fun to offer an opinion.
All things considered, The Gospel according to Dracula is more than worth the price of admission, even if all you get out of it is a spine-tingling tale from Transylvania and a delightful nightmare or two.
