CINCINNATI, OH (ANS) -- Hosted by Pathway's Christian Church, Cincinnati's own Nicole C. Mullen will be in concert at Christ's Church at Mason, Ohio, on Sunday, August 21 at 7 p.m.

In the past few months, Nicole C. Mullen has spent some time nationally promoting her new CD, Captivated, which was released in May from Maranatha Music.

Captivated, her first studio album in three years, delivers a personal and profound message that is not only a watermark album for Nicole, but one that speaks clearly to today's generation.

Additionally, Captivated features a host of talented musicians and singers including Chris Rodriguez, Dan Needham, Michael O'Brien, Papa San and The Katinas. Nicole's husband and long-time music collaborator, David Mullen, not only co-wrote with Nicole on a few songs for the project, but he was instrumental in introducing Mullen to her first-time producing partner, Ed Cash.

"Ed has stretched me in many ways. His approach to things has broadened my creativity, making me go beyond what I thought I could do," said Nicole C. Mullen.

The project features a number of songs that celebrate God's majesty such as the powerful "Kingdom Come."
"Every other day there is a tornado or an earthquake or a tsunami or oil spill or whatever it is," said Mullen. "Even nature is crying out for the return of Christ, for His kingdom."

Other standouts include "I Need You (As the Deer)," "Forgive," "Lead Me" and Nicole's take on the Andrae Crouch classic "My Tribute" with "Redeemer" medley.

"My mom told me a long time ago 'when you sing, never sing to the people, always sing to the audience of one and invite the people to worship along with you,'" Mullen said. "And so that's my new aim these day is to sing to the 'Audience of One' and hopefully it becomes so contagious and the melody becomes so soothing and so inviting that people will want to sing along."

Mullen has also just released a new six-session small group curriculum on DVD from Isaiah 61 in the Inspiring Women series, entitled "Captivated By Prayer." In this new curriculum, Mullen shares life-enriching wisdom, scriptural concepts and practical tips on how to pray and she explores how Jesus used the Lord's Prayer to teach believers how to pray.

When not in the studio or out on the road touring, Mullen spends time working with the Baby Girls Club, a non-profit dedicated to affirming and celebrating each girl's worth and helping them to make a healthy contribution to their community. The group of 6-17 year old girls comes together to study, sing, and dance, sew, talk, laugh, create and dream. Her other organization, Team NCM, recruits talented youth to perform on stage with her.

The Cincinnati concert at Christ's Church at Mason, Ohio, will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets for the show are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the concert. To purchase tickets, visit www.cincypathways.com/home/concert.

For those of you who are in the Nashville, TN area, you can catch Nicole C. Mullen next week, as she serves as a special guest judge for Christian Women in Media Association's Women's National Music Showcase on Friday, August 26. For more information about the event, or to purchase tickets, visit www.CWIMAshowcase.com.

On November 5, 2011, Nicole C. Mullen will be inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame, along with six other Christian music artists. For more information, visit www.nicolecmullen.com.

The Mystery of the Wonders You Perform

By Rick MarschallSpecial to ASSIST News Service

SWARTZ CREEK MI (ANS) -- Life happens. As they say. How do we respond? Sometimes we see through a glass darkly. Sometimes we proceed in blind faith. Sometimes we pray to discern God's will. Sometimes we meditate upon His Word.

My idea is that God does not always hand us multiple-choice quizzes. Sometimes we can do all these things together. They are not mutually exclusive.

Some of my recent meditations are perfectly reflected in the lyrics of a gospel song from a few years ago:

The Mystery of the Wonders You Perform

Oh Lord, you know that I'm not one to bother you with little things,
And you and I have never been too close.
But we've always been on speaking terms, I've watched your way of doing things,
And tried to understand you more than most.

No, I haven't gone to church the way I ought to,
But I always thought you knew in my own way I worshipped you.
While even your own children doubt, and fail to understand
The simple way you go about the things you do.

I've seen the doubt upon the face
Of loved ones, as they sadly placed a wreath of flowers on a tiny grave,
And wondered why a child is brought into the world
To only live a little while and die, you could have saved.

But I believe that in your eyes this little child was something special
And you wanted it to be with you, no doubt;
So with outstretched arms you beckoned, so simple, that I reckoned
They can't understand the way you worked it out.

Once I saw a young man growing till he neared the age of knowing,
Then I watched as something happened to his mind.
No doctor could correct it, it was just as I suspected,
And I marveled at your way of being kind.

They tried everything in vain, and I was there when they explained
To the family, how he slipped into a trance.
I guess you looked into the future, watched him turn his back upon you,
Loving him so much you couldn't take the chance!

It took a lot of love to die for sinners such as I,
And I guess that's why you've never given up on me.
You understood when some denied you, even when they crucified you,
Knowing all these things were meant to be.

The stable's such a simple thing, no wonder there were few who came
To see a king the night that you were born.
And I'd ask one favor if I can, help me to better understand
The mystery of the wonders You perform,

The mystery of the wonders You perform.

'Twinning Today and Winning Tomorrow'

Church Twinning - A Unique Way for Congregations to Link with an Overseas Church

By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries

DECATUR, GA (ANS) -- When my wife Norma and myself began ASSIST Ministries more than 23 years ago, one of our first projects was what we called a "Sister Church Program," which was a way that a Western church could link-hands with an overseas church so they would learn from each other.

Dan and Norma Wooding (left) meeting with believers in Cuba. (ANS Photo)
We started in Cuba and Norma and I traveled to the communist island to profile churches there and when we got back to the States, we began to seek out American churches to link with them.

One of our first linkings was with Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, California, which we twinned with a church in Cuba and soon a team from the church traveled there, not only to bring moral and spiritual support, but also to be blessed by the wonderful Cuban believers.

Shortly afterwards, several other Calvary Chapels signed up and sent teams to Cuba and one of them even started Calvary Chapel of Havana. Soon, Cuban pastors were also visiting their sister churches in Southern California, and long-standing friendships were begun.

ASSIST Canada also joined in and they concentrated on Nicaragua and were regularly sending teams of Canadian Christians to that Central American country, and some of them helped build churches there as well as providing support for indigenous ministries.

Unfortunately, eventually the US side of the work began to peter out when, in some cases, pastors changed and the new leader decided to not continue with the linking.

So I was delighted to discover that Church Twinning International, Inc. (USA) based in Decatur, Georgia, has been co-founded by the Rev. Dr. Sidney R. Holston, who described the project as "twinning today and winning tomorrow."

Rev. Dr. Sidney R. Holston
He says, "The purpose of Church Twinning is to encourage congregations though separate by culture and distance, to 'assist' each other with the building of the church as a whole. He says he bases this on the commission by Jesus when he sent the disciples out two by two, according to Mark 6: 7 which says, 'And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits.'" (King James Bible.)

Some time ago, Billie Cheney Speed of the Atlanta Journal Constitution wrote an article about the program called: "'Twin' churches joining hands around world to share a faith."

In it, Speed wrote, "The Rev. Sidney R. Holston of Decatur, Georgia, believes that the concept of 'twinning' in which an American church joins with a church of another country to exchange ideas and resources, could help solve some of the world's problems."

"For example, if each church in the United States had acquired a twin church in Africa a decade ago, the crisis facing that part of the world might not exist today, Holston said."

He was quoted as saying, "We would have been aware of the hunger and the political problems. And perhaps we could have done something to help the people before all this reached extreme proportions."

The story continued, "Holston is president of Church Twinning International as of the early 1980's.... If he had his way, he would twin every church in the United States with a church in the Third World.

"While he is convinced that twinning promotes a link between churches through confession of a common faith in Jesus Christ, he also sees it as an opportunity for two groups of people with entirely different cultural backgrounds to get to know each other better. 'And one could even say that such unity could aid in fostering better international relations,' he said.

"The church twinning concept was introduced to Holston by Andrew Crakye Denteh Ghana in September 1981 and then to Dr. G. Murray Branch, pastor of Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church of Montgomery, Alabama in October 1981."

The story went on to say that Holston, and Branch "accepted the idea and decided to help the minister from Ghana, visiting the United States at the time, implement it."

"While the focus now seems to be on Africa, Holston stressed that church twinning is needed in other parts of the world."

"He noted that while the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church is a twin to the Feden Church of Ghana, the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Decatur is in a twinning ministry with three churches in Jamaica." In July 1988, Dexter Church Family twinned with Calvary Methodist Church family in Accra, Ghana West Africa.

"The Reverend John E. Talford, pastor of the Trinity Presbyterian Church for 17-20 years, said his congregations of 750 members is working with two churches in the Montego Bay area and another in the Sommerton community."
"Last summer, he and a team of his members went to their twin churches in Jamaica and conducted a week of evangelism services.

"'During that time we had an opportunity to meet with the people, spend time in their homes and observe their needs', he said."

"'It is a beautiful island but it is poverty-stricken,' he said. 'And we returned with a desire to do something to help the people there."

"It was decided that members of the Presbyterian Trinity Church, along with others who might want to lend their skills, would return to Jamaica to participate in one to two week workshops."

"Talford said cosmetologists, nurses, clerical workers, child care, storytellers, people who can conduct Bible schools and others who want to help may join the team.

"'It is an exciting ministry because it gives us an opportunity to participate their culture, share their beliefs, look at their strengths and accept their participation,' Talford said."

Sadly, since the story was written, Dr. Branch and Rev. Talford are deceased.

Now Holston would like to introduce courses in American and Canadian seminaries so that students can learn about church twinning and the first course began at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The summer of 2010 saw the Interdenominational Theological Center present this new study course titled "The Introduction and Principles of Church Twinning" by ITC Professor Dr. Marsha Snulligan Haney, Rev. Dr. Arthur Carson, Jr., pastor at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia and a member of the ITC New Study Course Program and Committee, and Rev. Dr. Sidney Holston co-founder Church Twinning International, Inc.

This course was incorporated into the "Introduction to Missiology" which is a required course, and additionally the class was introduced to increase cultural awareness and spiritual growth.

"It combines economic interest and creates innovative programs and projects that further exchange cooperation and fellowship," says Dr. Holston.

Orissa's New Homeowners Speak

Gospel for Asia
For Immediate Release

ORISSA, INDIA (ANS) -- The housewarming parties continue in Orissa, India, as Christians move into new homes constructed by Gospel for Asia to replace those burned down or otherwise destroyed during the horrific rampage targeting Christians in 2008. During the August, 2008, attacks, thousands of homes, churches and businesses owned by Christians were burned to the ground. Hundreds of people were attacked, beaten and even set on fire. Dozens were killed and hundreds still bear the scars on their bodies.

The new houses are a reminder to these first-generation Christians that Jesus cares for them. The new homes, mostly simple concrete block structures containing kitchens, small living areas and bedrooms, are a far cry from the government camps and tents the people have been forced to live in. The funds to build these new homes came from believers around the world who were moved by the plight of their brothers and sisters who endured the brutal attacks.

Gospel for Asia-supported missionaries in Orissa developed a program called the Relief, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Project to facilitate the rebuilding process. These missionaries work directly with individuals and families who lost their homes in the riots, providing the materials needed to rebuild their homes. The recipients then build their new house with the help of local volunteers.

To date, more than 1,000 new homes have been built for survivors who lost their homes during the rampage. The small, sturdy homes provide a sense of security for brutalized Christians. They are also a living testimony that God loves and provides for all their needs.

But those sentiments are best summed up by the new homeowners themselves. Here's what some of them had to say on move-in day:
"I was staying in the Tikabali relief camp after my house was totally broken and burned in the riot. My family was outcast and starving. We were wondering, not knowing what to do. But Gospel for Asia came and wiped our tears and enabled us to rebuild our broken homes by providing all the required materials. They have not only built my house, but also provided food and other relief materials. So I thank Gospel for Asia for playing this role." B.J. Prasenit

"There was a fear in people to enter their villages in those days-even the government administrators were scared. But in this situation, the Gospel for Asia Relief, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Project came in and united us by conducting village-level meetings. They also surveyed the damaged houses they chose to rebuild. They provided all the needed assistance and materials to build the houses and stood with us. Finally, we were able to build our houses again. Now we are in our village homes and feeling better and at peace. I want to extend my hearty gratitude to this project because it rebuilt my house and my family as well." Abu Khan

"All our houses were broken and burnt in the Kandhamal riots, and we had nothing to stand with. Our whole village stayed in a relief camp for many days. Our family's need was for shelter to live in. The Gospel for Asia project extended a helping hand to start reconstruction work in our block. I got all the needed materials and completed my house. God has re-established peace and happiness in our village and especially in my family through this project." Patnayik Rumaya.

"After the riots in Kandhamal, we were homeless; we stayed in the relief camp for one and a half years. So many times we visited the government administrators, and each time they told us the same thing: Go to the Gospel for Asia reconstruction project and seek help. GFA perceived our anguish and agreed to rebuild our houses by providing all the required goods within a short period of time. Now we live in our own new house, which is far better than the old one!" Elish Devda

"I am so very happy to be able to construct my house again through the help of the Gospel for Asia Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Project. All the doors of hope were closed for me. The amount I got from the government was not sufficient to meet the requirements, but GFA came and provided me with the financial assistance to complete my house. May the Lord bless them and give them longevity of mission." Ramesh Singh

"When I recall in my memory those days of disaster to my house and my family-even today I cannot stop tears from my eyes. There was a time we had nothing but the breath in our body. I had a house to live in, but within one night everything turned to ashes. But today I got everything back. Through the help of Gospel for Asia, I regained my house, the lost peace and the stability." Rajeev Lal

"I am so blessed to get a house once again. In that night when I saw my house burning, I lost my hope to build a house like this again because I come from a poor family. After seeing this beautiful house, I don't remember much about the belongings I lost. I am overjoyed with the blessing. As a family, we will remain grateful for this reconstruction and rehabilitation project and for the Gospel for Asia ministry leaders in Orissa." Naseeradin Sripaul

"I am so delighted to say a few words about the reconstruction and rehabilitation project. Gospel for Asia is really committed to the service of people in our district. Because of the help and encouragement of Gospel for Asia, I was able to build a new home. The Relief, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Project is so excellent. I want to extend my hearty thanks to the project for making a house for me within a few short days," Paradip Nayar

"I am so glad to get a new house! After the riot we were living like wildlife. Nobody was there to help us in the tent.

Many times we had to face food problems, also. I want to thank the government official who told me about the Relief, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation project. We came to share all our problems with the project leaders, and they gave us food, other relief materials and even a new home within a few short days! I could see the grace and love of Christ through Gospel for Asia's workers. I want to extend my hearty thanks to them for making this possible for me and my family. We are so happy to be in our new home!" Barpoda Digal

"After the riot in Kandhamal we were staying in a relief camp. Gradually, we started to visit other villages to try and stay here, but that was totally not possible. The village people in our area restricted us from using wood from the forest, getting water and denied us the use of some roads, so we came back to the relief camp. Meanwhile, we heard about the Relief, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Project, and they built houses for us. We are thankful to them for their commitment and great effort." Sakina Pariasamy

"I am so happy to say a few words about the Relief, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Project. Really, they are so committed and have so much compassion for us. I never expected and hoped that I would get my house back.

This was totally impossible for me and my family. But wonderfully, Gospel for Asia came and fulfilled my dream by building a house for me and many others. All of these things seem like a dream! Whenever I see my house, I remember the 3R project and glorify the living Lord for His wonderful blessing toward my family." Loti Alok

"After the riots everything looked like darkness. We couldn't do anything for our livelihood and house re-construction. But in the meantime, Gospel for Asia was a light that shined on us by providing houses and other relief materials. From that day onward, we are living peacefully, and I am thankful." Suneja Chamria

"I am so grateful to God for sending the 3R project to the Kandhamal district to rebuild houses. They made my house in a way that was not expected by me! For all these things, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the churches." Aruni Sigaru

"I am so glad to have assistance from Gospel for Asia to build houses. Really, this was great for me and my family. So I am thankful to God and to these churches." Charya Nagaswami.

Gospel for Asia is an evangelical mission organization based in Carrollton, Texas, involved in sharing the love of Jesus across South Asia.

Colossians 2:8

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. (NIV)

Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elemental forces of the world, and not based on Christ. (HCSB)

See to it that no one carries you off as spoil or makes you yourselves captive by his so-called philosophy and intellectualism and vain deceit (idle fancies and plain nonsense), following human tradition (men’s ideas of the material rather than the spiritual world), just crude notions following the rudimentary and elemental teachings of the universe and disregarding [the teachings of] Christ (the Messiah). (AMP)

What are the “basic principles, elemental forces of this world” that Paul is referring to?
